Hello, my name is Jaime Selwood and I am an associate professor of English at the Institute for Foreign Research and Education at Hiroshima University. I am originally from Northumberland in north-east England, but have worked and taught in Europe and Asia. I am currently an associate professor of English at Hiroshima University in Japan. I have presented my research at as a guest speaker and at conferences across Asia, Europe, Australasia, North America and South America. I have also been published in books, academic journals and conference papers. I am skilled in mobile technology development, particularly the recording, editing, uploading and maintaining of accessible materials such as podcasting, video blogs and digital interactive posters. I have also developed apps for my students to act as a conduit for their study both in / out of classroom. I am passionate advocate of technology as a vital cog in learning across all disciplines, cultures and languages. 

RESEARCH AREAS: Political Science
  • My PhD investigates how succession in constitutional monarchies legitimises the institution in the 21st Century –  focusing on Japan and the United Kingdom. 
  • Succession is the ultimate legitimacy test for any change in leadership, this is more acute when the institution is based on hereditary succession. 
  • Investigating the contrasts and similarities between succession from abdication and from natural causes. 
  • My other area of research centres on the elective monarchies  – focusing on Malaysia and Cambodia. 
  • Future research is centred around the evolving stability of monarchies in the Middle-East and North Africa. ​
RESEARCH AREAS: Mobile Technology 
  • My primary research in this field has focused on the usage of mobile technology as a key learning tool – particularly podcasting and digital interactive posters. 
  • ​Podcasting has over the last decade become a popular medium for entertainment, yet remains underused as a learning tool.
  • Since 2011, I have been conducting research, individually and with fellow researchers, into the effectiveness of podcasting. 
  • Interactive posters are a new format that allows for embedded information to be contained with a digital format – and accessible through mobile devices. This is a radical departure from conventional top-down presentation styles.
  • An interactive poster allows for the attendee to engage with the material in a manner suited to their own needs. I have created and presented on this area, as well as designed courses for students. 
  • I have also researched the impact of online learning software as learning engagement evolved in the post-pandemic world  – specifically the HyFlex Learning model.
